Gettysburg Address
Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. 改革开放以来,我国的英语教育规模不断扩大,教育教学取得了显著成就。然而受应试教育的影响,学校教育仍普遍存在重考试成绩轻口语交际能力的现象。为适应新课程改革提出的“从生活经验和认知水平出发,发展学生的综合语言运用能力,使语言学习的过程成为学生形成积极的情感态度、主动思维和大胆实践、提高跨文化意识和形成自主学习能力的过程”要求[1],我校多年来在英语教育教学过程中组织学生积极参与各种形式的课外实践活动,提高学生的英语综合运用能力。笔者主要谈谈自己所在学校在创建外语特色学校的过程中,为提高中学生英语口语交际能力而开展的一系列课外活动,以及这些活动的活动所产生的影响。
一、提高中学生英语口语交际能力的课外活动研究的背景
笔者所在的学校自创办以来就非常注重英语特色学校的建设,一方面是为了适应课程改革的需要,另一方面是为了不断积累英语特色办学的经验。在十多年的实践过程中,我们不断尝试各种有效的活动方式体现办学特色。尤其在课外实践活动中,我校和社会各方面密切合作,开展多种多样的活动,培养学生的听、说、读、写能力。在众多的课外实践活动中,学生最感兴趣的就是提高英语口语交际能力的活动。自2011年7月我校开始筹备到进入研究江苏省教育科学“十二五”规划课题的“外语特色学校创建中的英语教学辅助活动研究”以来,我们对能提高中学生口语交际能力的几个行之有效的课外活动进行了长期的跟踪研究。
二、提高中学生英语口语交际能力的主要课外活动的选择
根据近年来,学校的课堂教育中仍然存在只注重学生英语知识的输入而忽视学生英语能力输出的传统顽症,我们在课外活动的选择上更注重以提高学生英语口语交际能力为主的活动,同时顾及时间和场地的利用,学校、家庭及社会有关机构的合作等。所以我们选取的活动形式时主要从三个方面考虑:一是便于学校和家庭,以及社会合作机构的操作,二是既联系学生生活又促进学习,三是成为学生人生成长中的宝贵经历。我们选定两种主要的形式作为研究对象:一是英语演讲,二是涉外交流。
英语演讲最能体现学生的英语水平和口语交际能力,因此英语演讲是提高学生口语水平的新途径[2]。进入21世纪,随着国际间交往的日益频繁,高水准的口头表达能力和演讲能力成为人们在生存和竞争中制胜的“法宝”和“杀手锏”,较高水平的口头表达和交流能力是现代社会对人才的一项基本且重要的要求[3]。所以我们通过组织学生积极主动参与校内外各种英语演讲比赛,促进学生主动加强听力能力和口头表达能力的训练,鼓励学生大胆摆脱“哑巴”英语,努力学习“有声”英语,提高英语口语交际能力。
涉外交流是我们在特色办学过程中不断发展起来的一种有效的、影响更广的课外活动形式。涉外就是和外国人有交流,学英语的最终目的就是用英语,在我国长期的英语教学过程中,中国学生几乎没有和外国人交流的经验。随着经济全球化步伐的进一步加快,国际的跨文化交际日益频繁,单纯学习语言知识而不了解中西方文化的差异,无法达到有效交际的目的[4]。我们通过涉外交流活动,把外国专家、学者、学生、社团请进来,派遣我校老师、学生走进外国大学、中学、家庭体验外国文化,增强学生的跨文化意识,提高学生的口语交际能力。
三、提高中学生英语口语交际能力的课外活动的具体实践
经过多年的实践,我们已经固定下来并一直在实行的演讲活动有:校内演讲、校外演讲。涉外交流合作形式有:和英美中学结缔友好合作学校、访问英美文化夏令营、邀请英美学者来校讲学、邀请外国留学生举行英语座谈。
(一)英语演讲比赛活动具体实践。
1.举办英语演讲指导讲座。首先,通过学校英语俱乐部,组织主动积极参与英语演讲活动的学生在学校礼堂收看英语演讲视频,如《21世纪全国中学生英语演讲视频》、《CCTV希望之星英语风采大赛》等,让学生在观看全国中学生演讲比赛视频的过程中产生参与英语演讲的热情。然后,学校教务处安排老师做专题讲座,从演讲稿的选题立意、论据收集、谋篇布局、措辞运用、语言修改、演讲道具到英语演讲中的语音语调、音高、语速、停顿、重音、声音的抑扬顿挫及节奏感的把握,再到面部表情、眼神、手势等技巧的运用及情感控制等方面进行详细的指导。
2.举办校内演讲比赛。每学期在学校内举行一次主题演讲比赛。学校教务处英语教科室结合学生的实际选定主题,如my home,school life,my problems等,给学生一周的时间,由英语老师指导修改演讲,在班级进行预备演讲和筛选,最终确定参与学校比赛的学生名单,一个班级一个名额。在全校演讲比赛的日子,全体师生共同参与,共同欣赏学生的精彩演讲。学校根据比赛成绩表彰奖励演讲优秀的学生。
3.组织校外演讲比赛。我校近年来与中国日报社“21世纪杯”全国中小学生演讲比赛江苏组委会合作,组织学生参加“21世纪杯”全国中小学生演讲比赛。学校在每年10月份接到比赛组委会演讲主题通知后,布置各英语老师在班上进行宣传,鼓励同学积极报名,自愿参与,并对本班同学的演讲稿认真筛选,确定本班参赛人员名单。教科室再统计全校参赛人数并进行核对,将参赛人的名单、联系方式、指导老师等资料统一打包上交大赛组委会。教师组织这些学生每周集中培训一次,不断提高演讲口语表达能力。每年我校有数十名学生进入复赛和数名同学进入江苏省决赛。
(二)涉外交流活动的具体实践。
根据交往的形式,我们将涉外交流活动分为单向型和双向型。单向型主要是由我校组织学生前往英美国家的文化单位学习,了解西方国家的文化。或接受英美国家友好学校或其他团体来我校访问,传递我们的文化。双向型主要是我校和英美友好学校建立互助关系,互派学生交流学习。
1.单向型涉外交流的具体实践。
主要形式是夏令营这是提高学生口语交际能力的主要涉外交流活动之一。每年暑假学校组织学生到英国和美国进行学习交流活动。学生居住在英国或美国家庭中,和家庭主人共同生活两周时间,在这两周的时间里,学生还走入社会,和当地居民交流,走访当地学校和文化单位,学习英美文化。通过夏令营的实践活动,学生的口语交际能力大大提高。
另外,邀请在国内的外籍学生和老师到本校和学生举行交流聚会。如2013年1月10日下午,美国伊利诺伊大学厄本纳-香槟分校师生一行18人来我校访问交流。在每学期两次的聚会中,学生大胆开口,尝试用英语表达自己的想法,学会了和外国友人交流。
2.双向型涉外交流的具体实践。
双向型的涉外交流活动主要是和联谊学校合作,互派交换学生。这是一种长期而有效的提高学生口语交际能力的方式。2012年10月18日,我校与美国North Cross学校缔结成友好学校。双方都安排学生到对方学校学习,为不断提高学生的口语交流能力创造良好的外部条件。返回学校后的外派学生又促进本校同学的英语口语交流能力。当然这样的活动不仅需要学校专项研究经费的支持,还需要本地经济实体的大力支持。
四、提高中学生英语口语交际能力的课外活动的积极影响
有效组织英语演讲和涉外交流活动,有助于充分发挥每个学生的潜能,培养学生的创新精神和实践能力,促进学生个性的健康发展,完善学生的综合素质,提高学生实际语言运用能力。所以这两种形式的课外活动主要有以下积极影响:
(一)对提高学生口语交际能力起到了明显的促进作用。在演讲比赛活动中,学生为了展示自己的口语表达能力,加强训练,不断模仿和强化地道的英语口语表达习惯。通过视频观看,班级模拟练习,以及参赛者的集中训练,提高了学生的语境适应能力,调动了学生练习口语的积极性,同时增强了开口用英语表达的自信心。在跨文化交流活动中,学生表现得更为好奇和积极。为了能将自己所学的在英语环境中表达出来,和地道的英美人士进行实地交流,学生更加注意培养自己的语言表达能力。在现实交流中学生会碰到语言交流中的差异,在发现差异和适应差异的过程中学生不断地修正自己的表达,从而提高自身的口语交际能力。通过参加这些活动,学生更加认识到提高英语口语交际能力的重要性。
(二)通过举办这些活动,促进了学生自身全面发展,符合课程标准的要求。英语演讲和涉外交流活动为学生提供展示自我、挑战自我的平台,创造互相交流和学习的机会。学生在英语演讲活动和涉外交流活动准备阶段,通过搜集整理有关资料,扩大知识面,培养自主学习能力;在英语演讲和涉外交流活动进行中,通过大胆开口、积极思维,提高心理素质,发展批判性思维习惯的形成,以及批判性思维能力[5],为学生终身发展积累一定的宝贵经验。
(三)通过组织这些活动,促进了校园文化的建设。英语演讲和涉外交流活动是外语特色学校创办过程中所实施的课外教学辅助活动的一部分,学生积极参与这些活动,为学校营造浓郁的英语文化氛围,展示蓬勃向上的精神风貌,凸显外语特色学校的特色,促进我校相关课题研究的顺利进行。同时在组织这些活动中,英语教师队伍整体专业素质得到了提高,为学校的可持续发展创造了良好的外部环境。
总之,在英语特色学校创办过程中,通过组织演讲比赛和涉外交流等课外活动,在激发学生的学习兴趣和提高学生的口语交际能力方面的确起到了积极的促进作用。教师和学生在这些活动中所都出的努力也有了很大收获,但是在今后的学校发展过程中,为了更好地适应课程改革的需要,还要不断优化此类活动的开展,让更多的学生参与其中,为学生提供更多实践舞台,为以后跨文化交流打下基础;为教师提供专业提升机会,为教师拓宽教学视野;为学校的可持续发展开辟更加宽广的道路,促进中西方学校相互间的交流与沟通。
